Man and Boy
Man and Boy Statement
For some years now I have been interested in photography and how the advent of digital technology has changed our behaviour toward capturing imagery. I well remember having a roll of 12 exposure film and every shot was so precious because of the costs of film and printing, leaving photos limited to special occasions. Now we all capture images incessantly through our phones, taking photos at a whim and sharing them on social media. Digital photography and social media have changed our documenting behaviour very quickly.
The paintings in Man and Boy are based on photographs from a family holiday. They capture special moments. The Man and Boy that appear in this series of works, clearly have a strong familial bond. Sifting through a vast array of photographs, I recreated those images I wanted to make more precious and long-lasting as paintings.
The hashtags incorporated into titles indicate that these images have been shared on social media. No longer confined to shoe boxes and family albums, today’s incessant capturing and sharing of photographs blur the boundaries between private and public.
This series is also a testament of love to my husband Vito and son Felix.
