Going Places
Going Places statement
The work for ‘Going Places’ is immersed in how we experience the landscape in our fast-paced society where the busyness of life means that much is only glimpsed or merely sampled. It continues the fleeting views of landscapes begun with my previous series, ‘Views from a Speeding Train’. Unlike those works, however, which were of European locations, I wanted to make these new paintings distinctly Australian.
These paintings quite deliberately re-enact a ‘road trip’ with the individual works collectively recreating a sense of movement through changing scenes as we focus on the road ahead. As with the earlier work, the narrative of the unseen viewer plays a role in interpreting the work, as does the sense of continual forward motion; the pace of modern life defying contemplation and quietude.
Using one common road trip (travelling from one family member’s house to another’s) I focused on the Bruce Highway as the subject matter. The colours became greener and crisper influenced by the glorious colours of Queensland.
